The requirements to practice acupuncture and Asian Medicine in NC are regulated and enforced by the North Carolina Acupuncture Licensing Board (NCALB). The requirements include graduation from an accredited postgraduate acupuncture college totaling more than 3000 didactic and clinical hours and passing national board examinations to become certified as a Diplomate of Acupuncture/Oriental Medicine. Acupuncture schools are accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, which is in turn recognized and reviewed by the United States Department of Education. The national boards are administered by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). Acupuncturists must also pass a Clean Needle Technique Course, which is administered by the Council of Colleges of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine to test and insure that acupuncturists have the safe needling skills required to treat the public. The recognized title used by Asian medicine practitioners in the state of NC is Licensed Acupuncturist, or L.Ac. Ongoing continuing education courses are required for renewal of licensure.
